While recycling is an important part of being more sustainable, we also are big advocates of the other two R's: reduce, and reuse. As much as possible, we try to limit what we throw in the trash can, knowing that just because we don't see where it ends up doesn't mean it disappears into thin air. When we shop, we always try to buy things in bulk, or things without excessive non-recyclable packaging. We also use cloth napkins and dishtowels and reuse nearly every plastic container and plastic bag that comes into our house at least once before recycling it. And of course, we always check with Jon (our recycling guru) before we determine the final fate our spent goods.
By tracking the pounds of waste we do generate we hope to increase our awareness while challenge each other to use the trash only as a last resort. Here are our results so far:
