Farmers Markets &
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Farmhouse is a proud and avid supporter of local foods. Luckily, Adams County is blessed with rich agricultural resources. The Adams County Farmers Market Association is very active currently operates four Farmers' Markets from April-October: the Farm Fresh Market at the Gettysburg Outlets on Fridays and Saturdays, the Wednesday afternoon Market at the Gettysburg Rec Park, and the Gettysburg Farmers' Market in Lincoln Square on Saturday mornings.
In addition to purchasing from local farmers, Farmhouse residents also trade labor for a CSA share from Broad Valley Orchard in Wenksville, PA. When it comes to good food, we don't mess around. |
Why Eat Local?
Three simple reasons:
1) It's better for your health (and it tastes better too!)
2) It's better for your local economy
3) It's better for the earth
Most Americans have no idea where their food comes from. But this hasn't always been the case. In the last fifty years, our food system has changed drastically from producing just the amount we need to feed ourselves to producing way more than we need, generating billions of tons of waste, and ruining our economy, our environment, and our society.
Lucky for you (Gettysburgians), you are currently living in one of PA's richest agricultural counties, number one in the state for apple production and seventh in the nation. Take just a few steps outside the campus grounds and you'll discover hundreds of local farms, orchards, and farm markets that grow and sell fresh, delicious, and nutritious food right here in Adams County! Below you'll find a handy resource guide published by the Adams County Local Food Network; you can also find it online here. Find out where to purchase locally grown food to support your neighborhood farmers and the local economy. Trust us: once you bite into that first real tomato, apple, grass-fed burger, or beet, you won't ever want to go back.

Think Local Food is only a summer thing? Think again!
Click on the image to the left to see a chart of all the foods in season each month in Adams County. You might be surprised! And buying seasonally is an important part of eating healthier and supporting a more sustainable food system; by waiting until march for that first sprig of succulent, home-grown asparagus, or saving that strawberry splurge until the sweet little non-GMO berries come into season here in June, you save the world a few thousand pounds of CO2, eliminating the need to fly, barge, and and truck it halfway around the world. Besides, it will taste sooo much better!
